Kinds of Pulmonary Function Tests

Daniel Skotte

High Desert Family Medicine and Immediate Care president and managing physician Dr. Daniel Skotte began serving the company in 1983. Part of the services offered by the practice, Dr. Daniel Skotte and his team conduct routine physical examinations, including pulmonary function tests.

A series of tests, pulmonary function tests measure how well a person’s breathing is by checking their lungs, specifically how the organ brings oxygen to the different parts of the body. These tests may help in identifying conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis respiratory infections, lung cancer, among others.

Spirometry. This test checks the amount of air an individual breathes in and out. The results help doctors determine the patient’s lung size as well as the rate of airflow.

Plethysmography test. This test assesses the volume of gas a patient’s lungs can hold. The patient undergoes the test by breathing normally at first and then vigorously. Doctors measure the pressure to identify the amount of air displaced by the lungs.

Diffusion capacity test. This test determines the capacity of the small air sacks in the lungs. Known as alveoli, these air sacks are tested by breathing in gases and then monitoring how those gases get into the bloodstream when breathing.
